Medicinal Chemist

Meliora Therapeutics is seeking a highly motivated medicinal chemist to join our Drug Discovery team. This individual will report directly to the SVP of Drug Discovery.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead internal and external medicinal chemistry teams to advance drug discovery programs.
  • Develop chemistry plans, strategy, and tactics to efficiently deliver high quality drug development candidates.
  • Work with the data science team to prioritize and select targets for drug discovery.
  • Design, synthesize, and characterize novel molecules targeting diverse protein classes.
  • Utilize and interpret multi-parameter data(activity, selectivity, kinetics, DMPK, physical properties, etc.) to drive medchem cycles.
  • Apply structure-based drug design, property predictions, computational and modeling approaches to prioritize synthetic targets.
  • Develop and implement synthetic sequences to desired chemical matter.
  • Communicate medicinal chemistry progress, trategy, and tactics to stakeholders.

Background and skills we are looking for:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in small molecule drug discovery or a Master of Science with a minimum of 12 years of applicable experience.
  • Experience with small molecule drug discovery approaches including protein degradation, PROTACs, and covalent inhibition.
  • Ability to interpret in in vitro and vivo ADME studies and drivers for PK/PD/Efficacy.  
  • Experience with multiple target classes and complex chemistries.
  • Desire and ability to work in across-functional, initially fully remote, and flexible team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively lead medicinal chemistry teams working with multiple CROs.
  • Knowledge of cancer related drug classes and chemical matter is a plus.

What you’ll do:

  • Bring your technical skills to bear on a critical problem in cancer treatment that results in 97% of cancer drugs failing their clinical trials
  • Develop, implement and validate novel, machine learning-driven methods of associating drugs and their properties with their true mechanism of action in cancer cells
  • Lead the development of large-scale machine learning algorithm training and evaluation pipelines
  • Grow, learn and contribute to cutting edge platform development that drives drug discovery.

Background and skills we are looking for:

  • MS-level expertise in applied machine learning developed either through a formal degree or meaningful experience in performing similar work
  • Expertise in the implementation of production-ready advanced machine learning algorithms using TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Jax
  • Familiarity with and ability to develop large-scale machine learning systems and workflows including parallel training and evaluation pipelines
  • A solid grasp of the fundamentals of machine learning science including broad capability in probability, statistics, machine learning, and programming
  • Experience in solving deep technical challenges by helping to develop and validate novel methodologies
  • Expertise in genomics or cheminformatics  isn’t necessary to start with, but you will need to be comfortable building an extensive cross-disciplinary background as you go
  • Excellent communication skills to synthesize complex technical problems and solutions into content easily understandable by the scientific and leadership teams to facilitate critical decisions
  • Ability to be highly successful operating in a multidisciplinary environment and a willingness to collaborate across functional teams is essential

Head of Cancer Biology

Meliora Therapeutics is seeking a highly motivated Head of Cancer Biology.

This role will lead the company’s biology, pharmacology, and early translational efforts. The Head of Cancer Biology will identify targets of interest and design validation strategies to support delivering drug candidates for clinical development. The Head of Cancer Biology will report directly to the SVP of Drug Discovery and be a vital member of Meliora’s Research & Development team.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead and develop a team to identify, validate, and translate cancer targets to clinical development.
  • Lead in molecular and cell biology, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology, and translational functions across Meliora’s program pipeline.
  • Establish a roadmap, build capabilities, and drive internal and external execution of cancer programs.
  • Provide insights for target prioritization, target validation, and indication selection.
  • Deliver impactful data packages and updates for pipeline milestones.
  • Identify external advisors, KOLs, and collaborators for platform and target validation.
  • Engage computational platform colleagues to develop strategies to identify mechanism of action perturbation signatures.
  • Provide biological input for platform roadmap.
  • Define strategies for innovative drug discovery programs.
  • Develop team members as project champions and leaders.

Background and skills we are looking for:

  • Ph.D. in Biology or related field is required with a minimum of 10 years of industry experience identifying and characterizing novel cancer targets.
  • Deep expertise designing and executing pre-clinical in vivo pharmacology studies.
  • Familiarity with IND enabling studies and relevant regulatory submissions.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Record hiring, leading, and developing a high-performing R&D team.
  • Effective communication with team members, leadership, and external advisory bodies.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple programs, implement creative strategies, and anticipate future demands.
